The Milkmaid

The fruit—abundant, generous, nourishing—is squeezed until it is depleted.

To be a woman is to be desired, to provide, to be a partner, a friend, a mother, a member of a community; to influence, to lead, to give, to help—and always, to take on more.

On one hand, doors and opportunities once closed to women have finally opened. On the other, these roles accumulate and layer upon one another, at times leaving a woman drained and exhausted.

Not every woman will become a mother, not every woman will be a provider or enter into partnership. Still, the feeling of being squeezed dry through the sheer multiplicity of roles is what I seek to express in this sculpture.
